Guidelines for Screening for Breast Cancer
- Yearly mammograms starting at age 40
- Clinical breast exam every 3 years from 20-40 and yearly after 40
- Breast MRI and mammogram every year beginning at age 30 for high risk women
- Women at moderate risk (15% to 20% lifetime risk) should talk with their doctor about adding MRI screening to their yearly mammogram
High Risk Women
- Known BRCA 1 or BRCA 2 mutation
- 1st degree relative with a BRCA 1 or BRCA 2 mutation
- Lifetime risk of breast cancer of 20% to 25% or greater
- Radiation therapy to the chest between ages 10 and 30 years
- Genetic disease such as Li Fraumeni, Cowden, or Bannayan-Riley-Ruvalcaba Syndromes or having one of these syndromes in a 1st degree relative
Moderate Risk Women
- Lifetime risk of 15% to 20%
- Personal history of breast cancer, DCIS, LCIS, ADH, ALH
- Extremely dense breasts or unevenly dense breasts on mammography
